Triple Whammy: Popularity of names in Hungary, Japan & Ukraine’s Lviv Oblast, 2015

Tripple Whammy 1

Yes, three lists of popular names into one post. The summaries are:

  • Bence and Hanna still reigns in Hungary – Bence is in his 15th year in the throne, Hanna in her 5th.
  • 悠真 (Yūma) and 葵 (Aoi) top Tamahiyo’s list of popular names in Japan – 湊 (Minato) is the boy’s runner-up and with the way the name rose, it might be number 1 at some point in the latter 2010s.
  • Maksym and Sofiya top the chart again in the Lviv Oblast – Maksym is the top boy name since, presumably, before 2008 while Sofia is the top girl name since 2011.

In the top 100, names with the biggest increases in rankings include 和樹 (Kazuki), 聡太 (Sōta) & 稜 (Ryō) for the boys and 凜 (Rin – doesn’t appear in previous years for some reason, after all, it is coming from a survey), 千愛 (China, Chia) & 楓夏 (Fūka) for girls.
About 湊, while it was in 2nd place in 2015, compare its ranking to 2007 when it was in 268th place in Tamahiyo’s list for that year (that ranking can only be seen for the 2008 list). Now, compare to 2003 where, according to Namae Jiten, it was only given to just 1 boy.

Regarding Ustym, I mentioned in an earlier post that there might be 81 Ustyms in 2015 based on simple calculations. The actual data has put the number at 87, slightly higher what’s been calculated.

Provided in this section are PDFs of the top 50 boy and girl names in the Lviv Oblast.

That’s the whole lot done. What do you think of the results? What do you think of the ‘Triple Whammy’ concept? Let me know in the comments section below.
