Yet another ‘Double Whammy’ post on popularity rankings where, in the Lviv Oblast of Ukraine, Sofiya/Софія still reigns supreme while Matviy/Матвій takes over Maksym/Максим as the top boy name. In Turkey, Zeynep and Yusuf are, again, the top baby names there.

First, here are the top 10 names in the Lviv Oblast:

I’ve provided PDFs of the top 50 boy and girl names in the Lviv Oblast for 2016 along with a selection of names given to between 2 and 4 babies for that year: girls and boys

Moving onto Turkey now and here are the top 10 names:

GIRLS

Rank Name Rank change
1 Zeynep 0
2 Elif 0
3 Hiranur 0
4 Defne 5
5 Miray -1
6 Azra 2
7 Zehra -1
8 Nehir 2
9 Ecrin -4
10 Eylül -3

BOYS

1 Yusuf 0
2 Eymen 0
3 Ömer 1
4 Mustafa -1
5 Miraç 1
6 Berat -1
7 Ahmet 1
8 Hamza 6
9 Mehmet 0
10 Yunus Emre 8

In the top 10, Hamza and Yunus Emre replace Muhammed (now in 13th place) and Ayaz (now in 18th place).
In my Name of the Year post, I was expecting Defne to rise further into the top 10 in Turkey, given that, in Germany where there is a high concentration of Turks and their descendents, the name jumped to 192nd place for 2016 from 337th place back in 2015 and that conclusion was followed weeks after by the release of the name data for the Netherlands in 2016 where Defne rose to 326th place from 487th back in 2015. So, the fact that Defne jumped to 4th place isn’t really that surprising for me.

In the top 100, new entrants include:

  • Girls: Kumsal, Gökçe, Amine, Masal, Lina, Asel, İkranur, Selin, Nazlı and Arya
  • Boys: Alparslan, Ömer Halis, Ali Eymen and Oğuzhan

They replace:

  • Girls: Arin, Elifnur, Ceren, Berra, Rümeysa, Eda, Elif Ada, Edanur, Şevval and Beril
  • Boys: Berkay, Devran, Eyüp and Samet

Same as for the Lviv Oblast, here are the biggest risers and fallers by rank for Turkey:
