Names highlighted in gold are names that rose during the year of the Rat and fell down in the next year.
Names highlighted in light blue are names that fell during the year of the Rat and rose up in the next year.

It is obvious that *ko names, in general, are dropping in popularity, so it’s no wonder that there isn’t a significant ‘rise up, fall below’ pattern for most names (Yūko/裕子, percentage wise, being the exception). Instead, most names either rise up in 1995, -6 and -7 or fall down in these years.

The next year of the Rat was 2008. According to Tamahiyo (Benesse):

  • Riko (莉子) rose from 24th in 2007 to 19th in 2008 and then to 13th in 2009
  • Momoko (桃子) rose from 68th in 2007 to 54th in 2008 but then fell to 100th in 2009
  • Riko (璃子) rose from 87th in 2007 to 60th in 2008 and then to 51st in 2009

Momoko is the only name out of the 3 that exhibit the ‘rise up, fall below’ pattern. The other two rose up in the year of the Rat and continued its rise in 2009.
